I’m writing here on this blog as I write a book in an as yet undeveloped genre, white practical theology. I envision writing a book facing my family history–the iconic Ingalls family, of Little House fame–and the consequences of white America’s root sin in the conquest of a continent and the peoples whose lands and lives were taken in the process. As a nation, we are in a demographic shift from white majority to white minority, and facing a long-in-coming reckoning regarding racial justice and our nation’s history. I deeply believe that in order to have a more hopeful future together, people of European heritage–those whose families were part of the colonial project of building America through land theft and slavery, and whose families benefit from this project–we must tell a more truthful version of our past.
